To kick off the 31 days until halloween, try these jet black twinkies- just like the ones you sometimes can (or sometimes can’t – remember when the halt of twinkie production was the biggest worry we had? ahhh good old days.) buy at the store, but with a halloween makeover! A note, though, these use activated charcoal to get the deepest color possible-which I find can leave a gritty feeling for a few seconds after eating, but is better in my opinion than using a pound of food dye.  

I would definitely pair these up with some episodes of Count Duckula for a perfect way to start October!

vampire twinkies

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 oz cake flour
  • 3 tbs activated charcoal
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 3.5 oz sugar
  • 1/8 tsp kosher salt
  • 3 tbs vegetable oil
  • 4 oz club soda
  • 2 c cool whip with food coloring

Instructions

  • pre heat oven to 350, coat a twinkie pan with cake goo or bakers best friend baking spray
  • whisk flour, charcoal and baking powder together and set aside
  • whisk egg yolks, sugar, salt and vanilla until light in color and expanded in volume - about 5 minutes, on medium high
  • lower mixer speed to medium and add oil and club soda.
  • immediatly whisk in flour mixture and pour into prepared pan 2/3 of the way up
  • bake for about 10 minutes, let cool for 5 mintues in pan and then remove to a wire rack
  • insert piping nozzle to the end of the twinkie and fill it up! repeat on other side!

Notes

Activated charcoal can leave a gritty feeling for a few seconds after you swallow.
