During some winter months in Michigan I really, really saw slush. It was cold, clearish and just grey, like the sky there for what felt like everyday the whole winter. But against that backdrop, my grandma’s house glittered even more, filled with Christmas decorations from the 1950’s, made out of beautiful glass and kooky designs. Every corner of her house had a plate of cookies, with even more in the oven. After days spent outside playing in icy snow we would watch Mr. Ed and Green Acres on Nick at Nite (which felt quite fancy since we only had network tv at home! lol) while all the electric blankets in the house warmed up the beds. Only years later did I realize that most people pictured the North Pole as a place like Lapland, and not like Livonia, right outside of Detroit. But these delightful cookies are a tribute to slushy snow, and all the things that really make something feel like Christmas. Enjoy with milk and leave a few out for Santa!
