Ignoring all the awful stuff, 2020 will be remembered for a lot of things, like the boss who turned into a potato while on a zoom call, realizing how closely roadside big cat attractions and weird sex cults were linked, and feeling like having 20 rolls of toilet paper stashed in a closet was the height of adulting.  I’m the kind of person who has visited every weird little museum or garden within 50 miles of my town, so stay at home orders definitely put a cramp in my “lets get out and explore” parenting style.  Also, I never realized how much even trips to Target broke up our day, even going to the grocery store together was a great way to get out of the house and stop the monotony of everything.  So, when Covid first started I was all like, “Ok! time to think up some boredom busters! it will be fun to finally have time to craft and play all day,” in an effort to fool myself and to reassure my kids the world was not ending.  Months later, I am definitely at the “let’s just watch Princess Bride on the couch together all day” stage.  So, please use these recipes if you are feeling up to it, but if not, it’s totally cool.  I promise not to judge, even if you have run out of toilet paper.

The crunchy cotton balls might be more fun for me than they are for my boys.  I just love smooching them! My guys were less destructive than me, or maybe they have less pent up rage, because they created pictures with them and wanted to save them.  I was like, “do you not see the hammer? Hulk smash time!”

The puffy paint craft brought me back to the crafting days of my youth, when we were all about the puffy paint on any and all articles of clothing.  This version is definitely not wearable, but honestly looks as good as any sweatshirt I ever made. Lets just sum up my puffy paint skills this way, every puffy paint sweatshirt became a Halloween sweatshirt.  This diy paint is more crafty, more puffy and maybe even more fun than the real thing.

Notes

little known fact: grunge was a direct reaction to all the puffy painted fashion of the 80s.  Before finding flannel, Eddie Vedder was a self proclaimed "puffy paint addict," and was known in the Seattle area for his masterful use of puffy dots.  He always carried a bottle in his cargo shorts for good luck during concerts.
