creepy doll gingerbread cookies

Halloween countdown day 9, creepy dolls and scooby doo

creepy doll cookies

One of the most fun parts of writing these countdown to Halloween blogs is that I get to think back on all the times in my life I have been utterly terrified for my life.  And, I can honestly say the most unnerving, spine shuddering experience I have ever had was going to the Montgomery County Antique Doll Expo.  And I’ve been through an emergency c-section.  Did not hold a candle to the freaky sensation of abject horror found at the fair ground expo hall that day.  Not even close.  And I pretty much almost died that day!

But, back to the Victorian dolls.  Did you know that Victorian collectable dolls usually have pointy teeth?  And some even have real hair on their heads? Real hair that kind of smells like old cheeseburgers?  And they have eyes that just follow you to whatever corner in an expo hall you run to?  They do.  And they have legions of fans who seemingly are not troubled by the facts I just mentioned and will happily spend a day wandering through aisles of these…these…beings, and feel calm and at peace.  My mom and I are not those people.  We went in thinking aww cute, we can see some dolls today and we left shells of the people we were that morning in our pre-Victorian doll life.

But those dolls are the inspiration for the next couple of day’s Halloween tricks and treats- these “creepy cute” doll cookies are infinitely less creepy than the real life versions that scarred me.  These are fun, vibrant and, once the frosting hardens, can be handled and played with before being chomped on!  The gingerbread recipe is perfect for making the next project in the countdown that is inspired by  these dolls…a haunted gingerbread doll house!  Because creepy dolls need a place to get their beauty sleep, too.

Here is the recipe for the gingerbread dolls, and a fool proof, hard as nails royal frosting that can bring whatever ghastly vision you have haunting your mind to , um, re-life.  But, if you happen to make a Victorian doll cookie, please just don’t show me.

With this halloween color scheme, I think these dolls would go great with any Scooby Doo movie.  Who doesn’t love Scob?  and these dolls make a perfect Scooby snack.  Shaggy approved.

royal icing

this is a great coating for a huge cookie, it firms up and is pretty hardy!

  • 3/4 c water
  • 1/3 c meringue powder

  • with mixer on low, drizzle water over confectioners sugar
