Who doesn’t love mysterious love notes, garden slug slime and crafts made out of socks? Celebrate your valentine’s day with a little light-hearted love affair between a clueless Herbie and the passionate Marylou who loves him by making your very own “Slugs In Love” inspired sock slug! This book is a great addition to a holiday reading list!
- Order ladies size striped socks from Amazon or a small local shop who happens to sell stripy socks! You will need one sock per slug.
- Sew a V shape along the tops of toes to make the slug’s eyes (see photo).
- Fill a baggie with ample stuffing, two ping pong balls and a felt heart. You can also include ribbon so kids can tie off the bottom of their slug, or just sew them shut. You can either include googly eyes for the kids to glue on or make them out of felt. I also cut out a smile from red felt.
- Have the kids read the love slug poem/ kids direction sheet (this doc also has direction slips for your to print out to decorate the bag) push in the ping ping balls and fill each slug with stuffing. I have them kiss the felt heart and slip that inside when they give their slug its name.
- Tie off the bottom of the slug (or sew).
- Glue on eyes of your choice eyes and the felt smile. You now have your very own love slug!
- I like to cap off this activity with a handwritten letter- have the kids write a letter letting a friend know what they love about them!
- You can also check out the garden for evidence of slugs! Try to find there trademarked iridescent slime trail or munched leaves. Or play with some slime! Happy Crrafting!
Don't be a clueless Herbie!
